A writing space is sacred. It’s where you go to express yourself, share your insight, and tell stories with the power of the word.

So how can we design this sacred space? Here’s a guide.

If you DO have space in your home…

Set aside a dedicated corner for writing activities.

The best place will have a window and feel cozy and safe. Somewhere you’d ride out a thunderstorm happily.

You can use a desk and chair. Or if you’re on a budget, try a folding table. Or just a beanbag and your laptop.

Decorate the walls with some art and quotes you find beautiful.

Put a calendar on the wall and put an X on each date that you wrote.

Invest in a candle warmer and some candles, which you can use to set the mood when you sit down to write. Creating a sense of routine can help with writer’s block.

You’re also going to want a good printer, plenty of ink and paper, highlighters, pens, a 3-hole punch, and binders.

When you’re in your writing space, put some soothing music or white noise or nature sounds on.

Or just open up the window and listen to the world.

If you don’t have a dedicated space yet, or you’re always on the go…

Pick out a comfy-to-carry bag or backpack. One that matches most of your clothes.

Put inside:

  • a journal or notebook
  • a folder for loose papers
  • a pencil case containing some pens and highlighters
  • the book you’re currently reading
  • a talisman (a small object of significance to you that inspires you)
  • some essential oils. The essential oils can be used to set the mood, just like a candle would.
  • If you can afford it, also include a pair of headphones, your laptop, the charger, and a portable battery- but these aren’t necessary if you’re on a budget. You can also just use your phone!

Take this bag everywhere with you.

Seek out libraries, coffee shops, cafes, art galleries, and places in nature that soothe you. At any moment, if you think of something interesting, take out your notebook and jot it down.

Writing in this way is freeing, holistic, and therapeutic. Everywhere you go, you have what you need to craft a story.
