When you start your spiritual journey, it’s so important and rewarding to get to know yourself well. Give yourself permission to be self-focused for a while.
Analyzing Your Current Belief System
Open your journal and for 5 minutes free write about everything you believe in. Don’t judge yourself or cross anything out. Just write straight from the heart for 5 minutes. You can rip it up or delete it afterwards if you want your thoughts to remain private.
- Did you have any religious experiences in the past? Did you go to a place of worship growing up? What did you believe? How did it make you feel?
- Do you believe we were created by a sentient being we cannot yet comprehend?
- Do you currently believe magic is real in some context?
- Can ordinary people will things into being, such as manifestation? How does that process work, do you think?
- How would you explain mysterious phenomena that people describe which you have not witnessed personally?
- Do you believe in any legends that you have not witnessed yourself?
- Why is there controversy on all these topics, in your opinion?
- Who is the other person in this world closest to your heart?
- Do you believe in a God or other deities?
- Do you believe in the otherworldly creatures from ancient mythology, such as dragons and fairies?
- What do you think will really happen when you die? What will happen to the other people of different belief systems? And what do you secretly hope would happen?
- Can living people communicate with the dead? Do they really see ghosts? What is the nature of that relationship? Is it unnatural and dangerous, or would you describe it differently?
- Do you believe certain people can predict the future, such as prophets, oracles, or fortune tellers?
- Do you pray or participate in any religious practices? Have you ever? What did you like about that process and community? Dislike? How would you characterize your relationship with the teachings?
- Imagine you are living in a different culture and your society is now to determine how shamans (or priests, or monks) should be taught and guided before entering into that profession. What should they be good at? What qualifications should they have?
- Do you care about nature? Should people have a sense of responsibility to our natural environment, in your opinion?
- Do you believe human beings have more important concerns than other living things and that’s okay?
- Are aliens real? Have our species made contact?
- Do you believe that some people may have reincarnated multiple times on this Earth? If so, describe what you imagine the reincarnation process to be like. Is karma real? Do people “reap what they sow”?
- Do you believe in alternative universes and dimensions? Can we travel to them? Do versions of you exist in alternate timelines?
- Are we (or some people) living in a simulation?
- What are your most important moral values? List a few characteristics of a “good person” in your eyes.
- What is evil? What is unforgivable?
- Did it feel wrong to wonder about these things, for you?
- Is it wrong to wonder what you would do, if you were a God or Goddess? If you’re okay answering this question… if you were a deity, what would be your role and attributes, and how would someone worship you?
- What defines consciousness to you? What does this say about our rights as conscious beings?
